Holy New Martyr Elizabeth, Grand Duchess of Russia
Holy New Martyr Elizabeth, Grand Duchess of Russia
Born in the 19th century to a Protestant family of German nobility, Grand Duchess Elizabeth grew up surrounded by wealth and glory. Through the care of a merciful and loving mother, Elizabeth became one of the most beautiful and wise young women of her time. At the age of nineteen she married a Russian Grand Duke and through him found the Orthodox Faith. After her husband was brutally killed, Elizabeth totally renounced her fortune and the illustrious life of princess. Fulfilling the longing of her heart, she became an Orthodox nun and founded a convent which combined charitable work with the life of prayer. But this wonderful work was interrupted after the Bolshevik revolution, when Abbess Elizabeth was arrested, tortured and finally became worthy of a martyr’s crown.
This is the story of a real princess, who through the power of faith left all temporal things and became the abbess of a convent - even a martyr - in a time of great oppression against the Orthodox Church.
